R: PADDON

Witness: Sarah RONALDS, William TOMSON, R TAYLOR

This will was proved at London 16 May 1800 ... by the oath of Benjamin PADDON the son and Sole Executor

The testator

Robert PADDON was recorded in a 1793 trade directory as a woollen draper of New Brentford. Evidence from the 1798 Land Tax Redemption places him near to the Magpie and Crown (128 High Street), probably 129/139 High Street, which continued as a drapers well into the 20th century -read more, includes links to photos. He took on four apprentices between 1770 and 1790, the last being John WOODS (Findmypast).

Robert left three sons, Benjamin, Jacob and Samuel. Benjamin was recorded in the 1838 tithe record of New Brentford, as was Robert PADDON (perhaps a grandson of the testator). The 1841 census has no PADDON in New or Old Brentford and presumably the family moved away.

The witnesses & executor

Sarah RONALDS is likely to be part of the family of nursery and seedsmen who lived near to the PADDON family, close to St Lawrence's church. The site has more about this family.

William TOMSON: may be the individual of this name who was living in The Butts in 1811: see the New Brentford census.

R. TAYLOR: not identified.

The executor, Benjamin PADDON, may be the individual whose death was registered at Kensington in the last quarter of 1839. At any rate, there are no later citations in Brentford until some BMD 1870 onwards.
