Gravestones at St George, Brentford
Thanks to Carolyn & Peter Hammond who collected inscriptions from the gravestones in St George's Church and to Janet McNamara who forwarded their list. This church is towards the eastern end of the High Street (postcard view from the early 1900s) and served the residents of Old Brentford, initially as a chapel to the mother church of St Mary, Ealing, then from 1828 as a parish church.
Burials took place here from 1828; the earliest entry below is from January 1829 and the latest 1866. The church is undergoing redevelopment during 2016 (Diane Newman sent three photos in February 2016 showing work underway). I am not sure what has happened to the stones and memorials detailed below.
Inscriptions were recorded in the following areas of the church:
- nave - stones 1 to 15, including a stone set into the floor at its west end commemorating a death at the nearby Waterworks
- entrance lobby by main door - stones 1 to 10
- entrance passage - stones 1 - 11
The table below includes two sets of information:
- that from the inscription; the number in the first column links burials in the same grave
- and, in some cases, information from the burial register for St George; these entries have 'BR' in the first column
The 'BR' data may match and supplement the inscription; often Janet and Carolyn have included other burials for the same surname: it is not known these individuals were buried at this spot, however the burial register shows they were buried somewhere in the churchyard or church.
Blank spaces indicate illegible or missing detail; OB is used for Old Brentford, NB for New Brentford.
