Will of William Grainger, 1854Abstract of willI William Grainger of Brentford, corn & coal merchant... dear wife Mary ... £100 ... William Thomas FARNELL (?) of Isleworth, executor £5 5s ... dear daughter Sophia executrix ... dear daughters Sophia & Anne ... dated 10th April 1852 ... witnessed by Charles ROGERS, Manchester Buildings, Westminster & James HUNT of Brentford ... proved on 14th June 1854 by Sophia Elizabeth Grainger, spinster The testatorIn 1841 William Grainger, coal merchant lived at no. 86 High Street New Brentford with his wife Mary, daughters Ann & Sophia and son William. In the 1851 census he is described as a corn merchant and his son William M as an annuitant. William senior and his wife Mary were born in Hayes. From registration records it appears the son, William Matthew Grainger, died later in 1851. William senior died in 1854 leaving no male heir and it is not clear what happened to his business. The legateesHis wife Mary may have died between 1851 and 1861: there is no sign of her in the 1861 census. The elder daughter Ann may also have died in this period: there is a death registration of an Ann Grainger in Brentford in 1857. The younger daughter Sophia was not living at home in 1851 and so far I have not been able to find her in this census. She was visiting Rebecca ROGERS in Motcombe, Dorset in 1861. The witnesses & executorCharles ROGERS: in 1861 Sophia Grainger, daughter of William and his executrix, was visiting a Rebecca Rogers in Motcombe, Dorset. Rebecca Rogers was born in Hayes, like Sophia's parents and I suspect Charles Rogers was also a relative.James HUNT: in the 1851 census a James Hunt, 34 year old corn chandler's labourer, was lodging at William Fulwell's home in New Spring Gardens, just off the High Street, Old Brentford. It seems likely he worked for William Grainger.
