Not Brentford

Will of John Sadgrove, 1852

Abstract of will

I John Sadgrove of Old Brentford...laborer

... I go give devise and bequeath unto my dear wife Sarah Julia all my real and personal estate

... I appoint Sarah Julia Sadgrove sole executrix

... dated 12th October 1830

... witnessed by Thomas Dewell, Tallow Chandler, New Brentford; Henry Newens(?), Baker(?), Old Brentford; Robert Thomas Fletcher, Solicitor, Brentford

... proved at London on 17 August 1852 by the oath of Sarah Julia Sadgrove widow the relict

The testator

John SADGROVE was recorded in his will and in the 1841 census as a labourer, however in the tithe apportionment he owned and lived in the house at (what was to become) no. 29 High Steet and presumably this prompted him to prepare a will (over 20 years before he died). He married Sarah Julia Bailey at Isleworth in 1815 (FamilySearch).

The 1851 census shows he was born in Shiplake, Oxfordshire, and aged 66: his wife was locally born. John had become a grocer by 1851. The National Trust surname distribution map for SADGROVE in 1881 shows it was common in the area of today's Twickenham postal district, which includes Brentford, and Oxfordshire.
