Will of James Conaway, 1841Abstract of willI James CONAWAY of Old Brentford, grocer... beloved wife Mary ... executrix ... son Henry and son John to be executors ... dated 22 December 1840 ... witnessed by William NICHOLS, Kew Bridge; Joseph Henry STEVENS, Old Brentford ... proved at London on 25 March 1841 The testatorJames CONAWAY: Pigot's 1839 directory includes James CONAWAY, grocer, Old Brentford.Top The legateesHenry CONAWAY: In 1841 Henry CONAWAY, grocer, lived at 320 High Street, Old Brentford. He was '35' (which could be any age from 35 to 39, rounded down) so seems likely to be the son of James. The 1851 census (see below) confirms this. A Henry CONAWAY death was registered in Brentford in the last quarter of 1854. Mary CONAWAY: Mrs Mary CONAWAY is recorded in an 1845 trade directory (grocer and tea dealer, Old Brentford) and in the 1851 census at 320 High Street, she was aged 74 and a widow, born Guildford, Surrey. Henry, her son was living with her, age 48, a widower. The following year the death of Mary CONAWAY was registered in Brentford. I have no 'sightings' of any CONAWAY in the High Street after 1851. The witnesses & executorJoseph Henry STEVENS: a basket maker living at 330 High Street in 1851, a few yards from the CONAWAY home How to see this will in fullA copy of the original will can be downloaded from The National Archives Documents Online service, or it can be viewed free of charge by visiting TNA at Kew.Published May 2010 |
