Old Brentford salesman deceased ... 21 August 1857 Before W C CURTEIS, Surr present N B ENGLEHEART, Notary Public On the 24th August 1857 admon with the will annexed of ... George Gardner ... granted to Sophia Gardner, widow the relict & the universal legatee NotesGeorge Gardner was a widower when he married Sophia POWELL at St Mary Ealing on 12 June 1851, both parties being of Old Brentford and 'of full age'. The marriage was witnessed by Mary BASFORD and Amelia TOMPKINS. George was the son of another George, an office clerk, and Amelia the daughter of William Powell, blacksmith. The 1851 census was taken a couple of months before he married and he was recorded living on his own at 244 High Street, age 64, a sales clerk born St Pancras. Without reading the will one would imagine he lived out his remaining few years alone... As to what happened to his widow, Sophia: she appears to have moved on by 1861 and a few searches failed to locate her in the census. Perhaps she remarried. The witnesses, Samuel and Henry RALFS were part of the family of medical men of 31 High Street.
