Brentford Families - Neighbour

Wendy Scott, wrote in 2006: 'One of my relatives, Richard Neighbour lives at number 74 in 1901, he is a chimney sweep aged 21 and lodges with Mr + Mrs White also sweeps.

The Neighbours in the 19th cent were Watermen then Richard and brother Robert became sweeps which stayed in the family till the 1960's when my Great Uncle Charlie Neighbour retired from his premises in Albany Parade which had an arch through to the stabling at the back and a huge pile of ash. Granddad remembered helping his father Robert after the war to clean out the factory chimneys, so big you had to climb into them and stand on the hot ash and shovel.'

Census records show Richard Neighbour was born about 1880, the son of Robert Neighbour and his wife Mary. The family lived just off the High Street at 7 Kings Arms Yard in 1881 and Robert was a labourer. Robert Neighbour was born about 1850, the son of another Robert Neighbour.

Robert Neighbour senior was born around 1826/8 in Ealing (Old Brentford was in Ealing parish at the time) and was a waterman in 1851, then a gas labourer in 1861. He and his family lived in British School Alley, between numbers 253 and 254 on the High Street) in 1851 and 1861. Robert died between 1861 and 1871, his wife Sarah remained in the house, working as a basket maker, in 1871.
