Not Brentford

Edgar Harold Holmes Turner (1895 - 1916)

Born in Brentford in 1895, son of Fred & Louie (Louisa) Turner. Fred Turner was appointed to found the library service in Brentford in 1889 and remained in this post until his retirement in 1939 (A85).

Edgar was a Lieutenant and fought with the Welsh Regiment in Macedonia. In an attack Edgar was hit when carrying flares and they ignited. Private Hubert Lewis carried him for two hours back to base even though he was wounded. Edgar died on 23 October 1916. Lewis survived his injuries and was awarded the VC; he died in 1977.

Janet McNamara adds 'Edgar Turner's name is also on the main memorial outside the Brentford Library and I believe he is mentioned at St Anne's church on Kew Green. He sang there - presumably with his father who was a great photographer and historian of Brentford.'

'I've also been shown 2 silver patens that are used for Communion at Brentford Free Church every week that were presented by his parents in his memory, originally to Brentford Congregational Church.'

'Chiswick Library holds a pack of 100 or so negatives of photos taken by Edgar in Macedonia where he was fighting. There were also some negatives of his grave taken by one of his friends from Kew.'
