Transcript of a letter sent by Thomas Neville to his sister Amy Jacobs in Brentford shortly after the Battle of Waterloo, 1815Bruxelles August 5th 1815Dear Sister, I receved your letter Dated the 2lth of July and was Very Happy to hear You are all well witch I hope these Few Lines will find You as before as to my parte thank God I am in Good Health But have bign under very heavy Suffering of my wound But I hope the moast of it is hover Dear Sisters you may Depend upon it I have indured a very Grate Payn witch I leave you to gess for the Ball Struck me Jest below the Knee witch blode away the Main bone of My Leg witch I Laid 4 days to have it cutt of But after that the Did not think More to do it but have bign trying Experyments with it and have taken out 40 bits of boan witch I have not bign moved from my bed never Since but I hope all Danger past for I was Very mutch afraid at one time I Should Loose it I Might only Pray to God he as kepe me from sickness or I never Could have bore it for having a Good State of Helth or I Must have bign a dead Man for this weather is very trying as numbers Died as have little or no wounds Dear Sisters thear is some of ower wounded men is come home witch one time I Did think of Sending My watch and watt little Property I had but if I had it would have bign 10 to one that You add ever add Gott it for I Did not no any Proper Directions to Give im but I hope in the next Letter you will Lett me noe weather you have Seen any one for I tould one to Call at Your House as well as I could Direct im. Dear Sister you will Give my Love to My Mother Liquise to my Sisters and brother and to Caution my Brothers never to think of Dowing the Like that I have Dun but content there Selves at home I did think at one time that there was no ball made to hitt me of all the Battles and Scerminges thatt I have bign in then Catched me at Last witch makes me an old man and a cripple witch now ought to be in the Bloom of my Prime and now I shall be a Cripple Duering the Remainder of my Life and I hope this will be a warning to them and not to followe my Example but I hope to See you all in England in the corse of a little wile But time and patients will Bring all things Dear Mother Sisters and Brothers I Gives My Love to you all and if aneything should appen for the worst I will Send you word without Delay so God Bless You all and I hope You will make you selves happy and comfortable So no more at Preasant but Remain your and our dutifull Brother Thomas Neville Sergt in the 15th ov Korps Hussars The letter is addressed: For Mrs Jacobs Near the Half Acre Old Brentford England and is date stamped 4 o’ clock 11 AU 1815 EV Published June 2006 |
