Brentford Councillors - Joseph S Gubbins

Introduction

Janet McNamara has researched details of the men who served as Brentford Local Board Members and Councillors, see intro page for more details of early local government structure.

Joseph Stanislaus Gubbins

Dr Gubbins first appears in the Brentford directory in 1901 living at 26, Market Place with LRCP & S Edin. after his name. The census for that year shows him as Physician, Surgeon aged 26 with his wife Josephine (26) and his sister, Mary (23) and a servant at number 26. All of the household had been born in Ireland.

He would seem to have been born in 1874 and there is a marriage for a Joseph S Gubbins recorded in March 1899 in Limerick.

He was elected to Brentford Urban District Council in 1902 and his name is on the Foundation stone at the Library (1903). In the group photograph of the opening of the library he is the young man holding a top hat 4th from the left, standing by the pillar.

The 1911 directory shows him at 29, Ealing Road as physician and surgeon. The census names the property 'Claremont House': it had seven rooms. Joseph and Josephine had two surviving children: John age 6 (John Patrick Gubbins birth was registered in Brentford in 1904) and a daughter age 4: her name is not clear but could be Nancy or Mary. A Helena Josephine Gubbins birth was registered in Brentford in 1906 and this seems likely to be her. The household also included a servant, Elizabeth Little and a nursemaid, Kathleen Coleman, born Newport, co. Tipperary. Joseph's birthplace was Nenagh co. Tipperary.

Dr Gubbins remains at this address until 1924.
His name is in the Ashford telephone directory as physician and surgeon living at Mayfields, Stanwell Road, Bedfont from 1926 to 1933 according to the ancestry website.

It would appear to be his death aged 74 registered in Staines in the September quarter 5f 193 1947.

Janet has also provided a photo taken at the opening of Brentford Library in 1904. To be added as time permits.
