Will of James Fletcher, gentleman of Old Brentford, 1841

Abstract of will

I James Fletcher...being of sound mind & regardful of the uncertainty of human life

... I give devise and bequeath unto my sons John Fletcher and Francis Fletcher all my real and personal estate effects and property ... to pay or to empower my dear wife Mary ... to receive the rents of my copyhold property in the High Street and Back Lane of Old Brentford aforesaid held of the Manor of Ealing and now in the occupation or tenure of and held under lease by my said son John Fletcher

... after the decease of my said dear wife in trust ... the said copyhold property to my said son John Fletcher ... subject never the less to ... payment of ... £200 to his brother Samuel and the like sum to his sister Ann and the like sum to his sister Marianne and the sum of £400 to his brother Francis

... as to all the effects in my house ... except deeds and documents monies and securities for money ... unto my said dear wife

.... all the residue ... to pay or divide between my five children John, Samuel, Francis, Ann and Marianne ... in equal shares .... and direct that every female be equally entitled to any property ... independently of any husband

... And I declare that I have excluded my son Thomas from any participation in the above division of property on account of having long since received from me an advance of £200 & since then a further advance of £600 ... interest ... making together about £1000

... I ... appoint the said John Fletcher and Francis Fletcher executors

... dated 30th November 1838; signed James Fletcher

... witnessed by Louisa GUY spinster, Taddington Gloucestershire; Robert Thomas Fletcher, Solicitor, Brentford

... proved 28th October 1841 by ...oaths of John Fletcher and Francis Fletcher the sons the executors

Notes

James Fletcher died after the tithe enumeration was prepared so his copyhold properties in High Street and Back Lane are recorded in his name: four properties in all, one of which he occupied: 277 High Street.

It is tempting to assume that the solicitor and witness to the will, Robert Thomas Fletcher, was related...
