... I give to Margaret (GEARY ?) the widow of my late nephew the sum of £5 sterling

Dated 14th February 1831

Witnessed by John James CLARK & James BOWERMAN, clerks to Mr George CLARK solicitor Brentford

Proved at London on 29th July 1831 by ... William FLEETWOOD the Nephew the sole executor

The testator

James FLEETWOOD died ten years before the 1841 census and the following notes are conjectural. The will suggests he was either a widower with no surviving children or was unmarried. A James FLEETWOOD married an Amelia WALTERS in nearby Hanwell in 1802. In 1760 a William FLEETWOOD married Sarah MARCH at Ealing, the parish church for Old Brentford residents at the time.

The legatees, witnesses & executor

William FLEETWOOD the brother and William FLEETWOOD the nephew: the tithe enumeration records that a William FLEETWOOD owned two houses just off the High Street Old Brentford, occupied by Thomas WATTS and B. MARSHALL. These houses were given ref. 121 on the tithe map and were in The Hollows. A few months later the 1841 census records a Benjamin MARSHALL living at The Hollows and presumably he occupied one of the 'two other copyhold messuages ... (in) The Hollows in Old Brentford' which were bequeathed to William FLEETWOOD.

Stephen William MATTHEWS now residing with me: no positive identification in 1811 or 1826 trade directories for Brentford.

Margaret GEARY? widow of my late nephew: a Margaret FLEETWOOD, widow, married Jos. PURDY in 1802 at Christchurch, Spitalfields. It is just possible I read PURDY as GEARY. In the same church a James FLEETWOOD married Margaret Ann ARGENT in 1785. Spitalfields is in Stepney, only 6-7 miles from Brentford but on the opposite side of London - so this could easily be an unrelated family.

Mr George CLARK solicitor: recorded in New Brentford as a 'Solicitor, clerk to the commissioners of Tyburn turnpike' in 1811 and 'attorney' in 1826 (trade directories).

Other Brentford FLEETWOODs

In the tithe enumeration a Miss FLEETWOOD owned two houses and yards, property ref. 198 in Old Brentford at around 378 / 379 High Street.

In the 1840s FLEETWOODS moved into Brentford from Whitechapel (see Fleetwood family notes).
