Not Brentford

Photo showing the Magpie & Crown, 128 High Street Brentford, 1920s/early 1930s

Magpie & Crown PH, on a corner, three floors; timber frame and brick infill on the first floor, timber frame white plaster on top floor, tiled roof; a small group of men are outside

Roy England has provided this photo, which was taken in the 1920s or early 1930s. Roy says 'I believe that the man standing in front of the pub would be my great grandfather Richard Holt'.

Richard Henry Holt was recorded in a 1928 trade directory as the landlord (but not in directories for 1920/1 or 1933).

Gillian Clegg's 'Brentford & Chiswick Pubs' includes a photo from 1969 of the Magpie & Crown. By 1969 the pub sign had been replaced and 'Watneys' is visible where the above photo shows ...Spirits. Isleworth Ales ...'.
