Brentford Families - Wright
John Power writes 'My great great grandparents lived opposite the Town Hall in the High Street in New Brentford. I have envelopes thus addressed dated c 1873. My great grandfather Alfred Wright (born 28.01.1841 died 12.03.1895) married Georgiana Elizabeth Spooner 11.04.1866 (born 22.04.1841 died 13.06.1906). I do not know how long they lived at the Brentford address but I do know that they moved to Drayton Lodge (now demolished) at St Margarets, East Twickenham.They had 11 children of which the eldest was my grandmother on my maternal side, namely Minnie Coulsey Wright, who became on marriage Minnie Coulsey Shillito. Incidentally two of her brothers (Alfred & Harold) founded the small department store of Wright Brothers in Richmond & which remained there until being taken over by Owen Owen in the 1970s. It has now gone completely - although the WB monogram does still top the building, being carved into the brick facia.
Research notes
The 1871 census shows Alfred, his wife and three children (aged 3, 2 and 1) living at no. 117, which as John says, lies opposite the Town Hall. Their eldest child was Minnie C, aged 3. Boarding with the family were two male and three female assistants, aged 17 to 30, three of whom were born in Somerset, Westmorland & Hampshire. Two female servants completed the household. More details of no. 117 and areaAt the time of the 1881 census Elizabeth C Wapling, aged 23, is listed as 'servant (head)' at no. 117. It looks as if she was in charge overnight? Alfred Wright and his family were living in Twickenham (8 Ailsa Park Villas) with 7 children and a niece. From the birthplaces of their children it looks as if they moved from Brentford to Twickenham between 1876 and 1880.
They had a son Alfred E Wright aged 4. The household at no. 117 High Street in 1881 includes an Alfred E Wright aged 17, assistant draper, born Thornton Moor in Yorkshire. Coincidence? Relative to Alfred senior?
