Brentford Families - Meads and Wise

Peter Wise wrote in July2015:

I have recently found out that my Grandfather was Bertie Meads. His father was Thomas Meads and his mother was Jane Sedgwick. My father, Herbert John Wise was born in the poor house in Isleworth, 1922. I was born in the same place, 1943 but it was the local hospital by then.

My fathers mother had an affair with Bertie, who was married at the time. The ladies name was Munro. After their divorce, Bertie and my grandmother, Edith Wise married and lived in Croydon.

I am desperate to find any members of my family.

Research using FreeBMD and ancestry.co.uk websites showed Bertie George Meads lived with his parents Thomas and Jane Meads, four brothers and a sister at 15 Albany Road Brentford (1901 census). His siblings Jane Meads, Thomas Meads, Ernest Meads, Percy Meads and Arthur Meads were born between the late 1880s and 1890s (and there may have been further children born after 1901). Bertie's marriage to Winifred M Munro in 1913 was followed by the birth of two sons, Bert Meads in 1913 and Thomas Meads in 1914 (all in Brentford registration district).

Electoral registers (ancestry.co.uk) show Bertie George Meads at 30 Brook Road, Brentford in 1922 and 1928, living with Arthur, Percy, Jane and Thomas Meads in 1922 - these match the names of his father, mother, brothers and sister but do not include his wife Winifred Meads; so perhaps he had split from her by 1922 following the birth of Herbert John.

Bertie's marriage to Edith A Wise was in the last quarter of 1935 in Bromley reg district, Kent, but I did not spot any further children. I found an Edith A Meads living alone at 145 Cobden Road, Croydon in 1963. Perhaps Bertie had died by this date.

Bertie may have descendants through his two sons Bert and Thomas; going back a generation there may be descendants of Bertie's siblings or through the Munro or Sedgwick families. It appears that Thomas William Meads, elder brother to Bertie, died in 1918 (his name is recorded on the Brentford war memorial. There are service records for an Ernest Meads, possibly his younger brother.

Can you help Peter find any members of his family? Please get in touch, I will forward your email to Peter.
